The New Profiling
Profiling in this country is a big problem. There are dozens of stories of people who are pulled over on the road - not done something wrong - but because of the color of their skin or the language they Speck. With the pig flu in recent years, other minority groups are targeted because of their link with the country of origin of this epidemic.
Is all of this right and just? No! And our government is working on means to fight against these trends. But while they try to stop racial profiling, they also create their own type of profiling.
Recent tax increases on the evidence. They have targeted smokers to tax increases. Further these tax increases are not intended to help smokers or taxes fall heavily on all the peoples - they are specifically targeting those who smoke. Smoking is addictive - so they are profiling and target those who are addicted to nicotine. But it does not stop there.
The tax on the rich is the new slogan of our government. Any problem, their solution first and foremost is simply to collect new taxes on the rich. Why not - they do not pay their fair share - Or do they?
In addition, governments in many states are targeting new taxes on fat people or people who like to drink sodas. Is this not profiling?
Those who fall into these groups are not segregated and punished based solely on their status or action take? They speak the same language as other Americans, they look like everyone else and many were even born here in this country - but they are obliged to assume additional obligations - On what basis?
If we taxed the physically challenged to use the handicap spaces or ramps - Would not it be wrong? If we taxed homosexuals simply because they are gay - would not it? If we taxed politicians for lying - if only not? Yes, everything is based on a kind of discrimination. And if we have separated the function of this discrimination - would not this profiling?
So what I do not understand is why a form of discrimination or profiling is OK while others are not? If our leaders can not shoot a person simply because of the color of their skin - Why can we raise taxes on people simply because they like to eat or smoke or simply because they are fatter bank accounts while the rest of us? Is not this profiling?
