almost 3,700 people successfully quit smoking in Bradford in just a year after setting a date to kick the habit.
According to the NHS Information Centre, between April 2009 and the end of March this year 7,846 people set a stop date and of those 3,692 succeeded – a 47 per cent success rate.
Smokers who said they had stopped were given a carbon monoxide test four weeks after their chosen stop date to prove they had not smoked.
Lorraine Bradbury, of NHS Bradford and Airedale’s stop smoking service, said: “We are already doing well this year, we are attracting more smokers into the service and supporting them to quit.
“Stopping smoking is the best thing anyone can do to improve their health.”
The NHS stop smoking service, part of Bradford and Airedale Community Health Services, provides different ways for smokers to kick their habit. It includes daytime and after work drop-in sessions, GP practice-based support and advisors at pharmacies and dental surgeries.
A breakdown of the 12-month period shows new Year resolutions played a part in stopping smoking, with January to March seeing the most people pledging and succeeding.
The figures are only for people who have sought help from the NHS, meaning the figure could be much higher with people deciding to quit alone.
across England 373,954 people stubbed out their final cigarette, 49 per cent of those who set a date.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said smoking was the biggest preventable cause of death in England and anyone wanting to quit should take advantage of the free NHS help available.
