DORSET -- The town of Dorset and The Collaborative have announced that town properties are now tobacco-free.

The policy, signed into effect in September, applies to six properties encompassing approximately 60 acres. The properties include a children’s playground, the town hall, two properties with hiking trails, the town green, and the town garage campus.

The properties will be designated as smoke-free with signs provided by the Vermont Department of Health and The Collaborative. Rob Gaiotti, Dorset’s town manager, said, "The Collaborative has been a great resource for our town, this policy will allow residents and visitors to enjoy a safe environment in Dorset, whether visiting the town hall or taking a walk at the one of the town parks."

Recognizing the positive health and environmental benefits of creating smoke-free areas, Gaiotti and Dorset’s Select Board partnered with The Collaborative to create a town policy restricting the use of tobacco on town-owned and leased properties, including vehicles.

In an effort to support town employees and residents who want to quit smoking, The town took advantage of the Quit@Work model, developed by the Vermont Department of Health as a resource for employers looking to promote a healthy community and the Vermont Quit Network, which offers free tools and resources to quit smoking.

"Working with the town of Dorset’s town manager and Select Board is a pleasure," said Victoria Silsby, tobacco prevention coordinator. "We congratulate Dorset for taking an exemplary lead in our community and supporting The Collaborative’s mission to develop a healthy involved community supporting substance free youth."
