Baypark smokefree policy starts

by admin on April 15, 2011

Baypark is smokefree for the first time tonight, but one Tauranga health practitioner also wants smoking banned in other areas in the city.

The ban at Baypark covers indoor and outdoor areas, including the stadium and pits.

Mount Maunganui woman Monica Walker practices as a bioessence therapist in Mount Maunganui, helping people quit smoking.

She is applauding the Baypark ban, but says other areas in Tauranga should become smokefree.

“They will have to implement it in other areas if they want new Zealand to become completely smokefree,” says Monica.

She wants smoking banned at the region’s main shopping areas.

“When you are walking down the street in town and someone’s smoking, the smoke goes right in your face and I find that quite offensive.”

“why make the tobacco companies richer and richer while your health suffers.”

Toi Te Ora Public Health Service health improvement advisor Rebecca Culliford, based in Tauranga, worked with Tauranga City Venues Limited on Baypark’s smokefree decision.

“This is a fantastic commitment by TCVL to go smokefree at Baypark Stadium.”

“By providing a smokefree environment this ensures an enjoyable clean-air experience for patrons, it reduces the visibility of smoking amongst our young people and supports those people who are trying to quit”.

Tauranga City Venue Limited general manager Ervin McSweeney says Baypark’s smokefree move will promote a healthy message.

“It’s also about the patron’s experience; we frequently receive complaints regarding smoking.”“The majority of people prefer to watch events in a smokefree environment.”

On at Baypark tonight is the Super 15 rugby match between the Chiefs and the Crusaders.

The Ten Days in Tauranga city guests from Christchurch are all invited to the game with tickets provided for them free by the Chiefs franchise.
