SYDNEY (Xinhua) - Western Australia (WA) is leading the way to implement the toughest anti-smoking laws in the country from Wednesday, according to Australian associated Press.
Member of Parliament of Western Australia, Janet Woollard, who introduced the Private Members bill in 2008, said she was pleased that the laws were finally coming into effect.
"I am so pleased because this legislation will protect children and it will help those who want to quit smoking to quit," she said.
From Wednesday, smoking will be banned in cars with children, between the flags at beaches and within 10 meters of playgrounds.
There will also be smoking restrictions in alfresco areas and retailers will be banned from displaying tobacco products.
Department of Health Director General Kim Snowball said the new laws would be a major health benefit to people.
"Smoking kills more than 1,200 Western Australians every year and remains the number one cause of preventable death and disease, " he said.
